WELCOME TO PATHFINDER ISLANDS

Welcome to Pathfinder Islands, our extraordinary inspiration zone in Second Life.

My initial scepticism about the value of virtual worlds has been washed away over the past six months by the extraordinary innovation and intelligence I have witnessed inside the communities developing the 3D future of the internet.

Nobody knows where this will go, but I want IHD to be at the leading edge of the experiments in on-line learning and this new 3D world. The only way to discover the future is to invent it or wait for others to do so!

One thing that we can predict with some confidence is that technology created for the multi-billion dollar entertainment industry will inevitably trickle down into every-day applications on the web, and into education and business. Gartner, the worldwide technology research experts, predict that by 2011, 87% of active internet users will have some form of 3D avatar. Mine is called Adrian Pathfinder – please look out for me on the islands, and say hello.

We have spent many months working with two of the finest creative minds in 3D design and have produced a whole series of video content especially for this experiment. Over the next few years we will continue to listen, explore, innovate and invest and you will play a vital part by giving us feedback on what works, what doesn’t and what you’d like to see develop.

Second Life is an extraordinary environment, full of contradictions – beautiful, ugly, creative, mundane, intelligent, foolish, erudite, and banal – just like life. Second Life is third party software developed and owned by Linden Labs. Institute of Human Development and MyPathfinder.com cannot accept any responsibility for the downloading or use of this software, or for the quality of your Second Life experience. IHD provides no technical support for the Second Life platform which can be obtained directly from the Second Life website and support services.
The environment and content of Second Life is created by the community of users. If you leave the Pathfinder islands to explore other regions within Second Life, IHD cannot take responsibility for the quality or taste of the content you may encounter.
The Pathfinder Islands are maintained as a strictly PG region which means that there is no ‘adult’ content allowed. Any infringement of the covenant published on the Islands will be taken very seriously and perpetrators of inappropriate behaviour will be banned from re-entering the region and immediately reported to Linden Labs who reserve the right to refer individual account holders to the appropriate authorities if they suspect infringement of the law.
It may not be possible to access Second Life on computers supplied and maintained by organisations. Members who join through their employer, may find that they are better to access Second Life on personal or home computers.
Membership of MyPathfinder.com does not guarantee access to the Second Life extension on the Pathfinder Islands. Memberships cannot be refunded on the grounds that you are unable or unwilling to access Second Life.
Second Life is demanding on computer hardware – especially graphics cards. Please read System Requirements before installing.
These Terms and Conditions may change over time, and you agree to accept all such changes throughout your membership term. Refunds of membership fees will not be considered after six months of continuous membership.
